First15 Sport Performance FAQ
What is Mental Skills Training?
Mental skills training uses knowledge and skills, rooted in sport psychology, to promote the optimal performance and well-being of athletes. Developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and issues associated with sports settings and organizations are also critical components. In addition to instruction and training of psychological skills for performance improvement, applied sport psychology may include work with athletes, coaches, and parents designed to address situations in need of mental toughness such as coping with injury, performance setbacks, managing conflict, and career transitions.
What are the benefits of Mental Skills Training?
Mental toughness is often referenced as the key factor that sets the best performers apart from the rest. All individuals can certainly benefit from training their mental game, as psychological functioning is a critical element of sport and overall wellness. Reduction of stress, negative thoughts, fear of failure, and anxiety, while also improving focus, consistency, confidence, and overall performance are typical positive responses to mental skills consultation and training.
What is involved in a session and how are they delivered?
Each session is tailored to the client in the interest of gaining maximal benefits. Individual sessions start out with an exchange of personal information, self-reflection exercises, and interactive discussion centered on exploring the interests and needs of each individual or group. Results from this information gathering process form the foundation used to help athletes set and achieve their goals. We work with the clients to ensure they are engaged in every step of their personal development.
How many sessions should I schedule?
An exact number of sessions needed varies based on the unique factors surrounding each individual or team. Individuals have reported significant benefits in as few as 2-3 sessions. Other situations warrant further attention, or a demanding timeline may increase the frequency of sessions needed based on a specific phase of a competition cycle. Considering the amount of time athletes spend on physical training may provide perspective, especially when you consider how much the mental side of the game impacts performance.
How involved are parents in mental skills sessions (for athletes 17 and under)?
Depending on the athlete, parent(s) may choose to attend sessions or may be asked to attend if we feel it is important in helping your child. At other times, we might specifically ask to work one-on-one with your child. In these cases, we routinely take time at the end of each session to provide important information to parents and guardians. With individuals under the age of 12, it is recommended to have parents present in sessions.
